Junior Program-kuljettaja Tuomas Pöntinen (Relaa Racing) nappasi kaksi voittoa kolmesta kisasta Kymiringillä 6.-7.8.2021, Jim Rautiainen (WR Racing) oli parempi sadekisassa. Westend Racing teki GT4-historiaa ensimmäistä kertaa Suomessa.

Kauden kolmannen kisaviikonlopun aika-ajossa Tuomas Pöntinen näytti muille kaapin paikan ajamalla ylivoimaisesti paalulle. “Kuivalla kelillä täällä on Pöntistä vaikea saada kiinni”, kuului varikolla.

Thomas Kangro ajoi jälleen varmasti kolmannelle sijalle. Tommi Harun hieman kadoksissa ollut vaihto tuotti kertaa neljännen sijan. Raimo Niemi (Relaa Racing), Simo P. Kangas (SPP-Racing) ja Mattias Wrede (Westend Racing) tulivat maalin sijoille 5-7. Jari Ollila (SPP-Racing) kirjautti DNS teknisen ongelman vuoksi.

Ankara sadekeli teki tepposet useammalle kuljettajalle: Thomas Kangro, Jari Ollila  Raimo Niemi joutuivat jättämään leikin kesken.

Kymiring offered yet again exciting racing with three races in mixed conditions. Tuomas Pöntinen (Relaa Racing) and Jim Rautiainen (WR Racing) battled for the victories - the Junior Program driver Pöntinen clinched two victories in dry conditions, Rautiainen mastered the last rainy race.

In the qualification session on Friday, the young Tuomas Pöntinen set the tone for his weekend. In sunny and dry conditions, he set the pole lap with a significant gap to the rest of the field.

Race 6 was the most predictable and the only dry weather race of the weekend: starting from the pole position, Tuomas Pöntinen secured without drama a P1, followed by Rautiainen in P2 and the EST1 Racing Junior Program driver Thomas Kangro in P3. Pöntinen also set the fastest lap of the race and earned the pole positions for race 7.

The second race of the weekend, race 7 of the season, began with hectic moments in the pits. The dry conditions suddenly changed to heavy downpour just as the cars were lining up in the pit exit after the 10 minutes sign was shown. The EST1 Racing seemed to have the advantage with the quickest reactions to the changed conditions and a fast tyre change on the pit straight. In the end, all teams managed to change to the wet tyres.

In the race itself, Rautiainen showed his superiority in wet conditions with confident driving and constant overtaking manoeuvres on Pöntinen. However, the young Pöntinen presented skillful defensive driving to protect his lead, which earned him his second P1 finish of the weekend. Rautiainen clocked the fastest lap, earning him the pole position for the last race of the weekend. Kangro secured yet another P3 with a composed drive.

Race 8 was the weekend finale. The start was in constant downpour, and the drivers set out Jim Rautiainen leading the pack from pole position. Already in the opening laps, Ollila, Kangro and Niemi were forced to retire due to the heavy conditions. This opened up the podium fight for Haru (THR), who clinched P3 which improved his performance of the weekend. Mattias Wrede brought the Westend Racing GT4 across the finish line in P4, which is a record of its own. SImo P. Kangas placed fifth. In the front, Pöntinen presented every trick from his overtaking book to challenge Rautiainen for the victory, and briefly claimed the lead, but Rautiainen mastered yet again the rainy conditions best and sealed his victory

History was made during Kymiring race weekend: Westend Racing team raced their GT4 for the first time in the history of Sprint Challenge NEZ - and for the first time in Finland. The team impressed with their professionalism and Mattias Wrede entertained the crowd by battling with the previous GT3 Cup car generations, placing as high as P4 in race 8.
